I have written two songs about September, one when I was 25 (September Again) and living in Provincetown and one when I was 40 and I had just completed singing 40 chants in 40 days leading up to my 40th birthday (Sweet September). I had returned home from a short stint of teaching music in the middle east and the Cape Cod September was absolutely breathtaking in every way.
Right now feels magical to me, especially because I am not a traditional student or teacher returning to the grind. As a freelance musician and small business owner it feels like a breath of fresh air, a moment in time suspended in between the rich abundance of summer and the quieting down of winter. I love it! Please join me this Friday night at Centerville Yoga & Wellness for a wonderful healing & chanting concert and get a taste of this joy. Or later in the month for the first time ever in HOUSTON at Nia Moves.
At age 25 I was still reflecting in my songs on the bliss of playing field hockey – one of my most favorite activities. By the time I got to 40, I was reflecting more on how the nature teaches us that nothing is permanent and like the earth we too have cycles of loss and growth. And they are necessary and best when embraced with joy.
Now at 44, I feel the incredible gift of living in New England and of watching the seasons shift year to year. The number 4 connects for me to the heart and that is where I am now. All Heart. This has been a process and not always easy. As someone who was very well-educated and valued intellectual rigor, it took time to allow those “this is right, this is wrong” thoughts to soften and feel my conciousness literally drop down from my head into my heart. When I am in my heart, everything feels easier. There is no need to prove or defend or argue. There is just, “what’s next?” “I wonder what that is?” “How may I serve?” Obviously this is an ongoing process, but at 44, I feel the most in my heart I have ever been – at least since I was 4. 😉
As I walk on into the 45th September of my life, I give incredible gratitude for every experience, every song, and every moment of challenge I have felt. I hope to see you at a show or at Sounding Still Wellness for a Monday night meditation (beginning again on Sept 14). Stay tuned for an exciting new VIDEO release of my title track WISE INNOCENCE on Sept 21. It is ALL HEART.

“The album’s title track, “Wise Innocence,” is one of my favorites so far, not only because it’s a slight diversion from Mathewson’s traditional folksy sound, but also for its power. This is a song that will urge you to sway your hips, clap your hands, and pay attention to the words, that will lift you up and if not point you in the direction of a better future, at least help you feel the promise that such a future exists. It is a stirring reminder to remember where we came from – that place of innocence and open-hearted wonder – and to hold on to those feelings even as we become aware that the world in which we live can be a difficult place.” – KS – Barnstable Patriot
May the SUN that lives within your heart SHINE SHINE SHINE
Wow. Another full moon in August has come and gone. I don’t know about you but this past weekend on Cape Cod was just perfect. Full Moon. Hot Sun. Cool air. Beach time. Live music. Family and Friends. As Mark Erelli writes in his song August, “A fool would ask for more” (ps. check out his new upcoming release Milltowns on Sept. 9)
This time last summer I can’t say I felt as good as I do now. In fact, I had just finished 30 days of antibiotics for Lyme Disease and was not feeling very inspired in general. Isn’t it amazing how our lives go through cycles. The longer I live and practice spiritual teachings I have received, the more I allow this to happen with ease and grace.
Want to open yourself to some of these teachings, not to mention connection, community, fun, and BLISS? JOIN US this weekend at Love Yoga Fest. I will be opening the day on Saturday at 7am with a chanting of the Gayatri Mantra, among other chants and then signing again on the Main Stage at 5:00pm. I will also be at a healing table with Kristen O’toole offering the Prema Agni & Rising Star Energy Healings Systems. This energy was taught to us by Derek O’Neill, who will be in Boston on Nov. 9. Stop by, learn more, and FEEL THE LOVE.
This weekend, right in Aselton Park Hyannis yoga teachers from all over the Cape and New England will be offering their joy, wisdom, experience, and fun for you to play, frolic, explore, and awaken. What a gift to Cape Cod!! I remember just a couple years ago we were doing yoga on the Green and now here we are!! Thank you Love Live Local Ladies and Annika for birthing this dream I had imagined way back then. May All Beings in All the Worlds be Happy and may CAPE COD lead the way.
This Full moon in July is called Guru Purnima and in the Hindu faith it is considered an auspicious day of honoring the guru – or great sage and teacher. Many of you know I consider Derek O’Neil a great sage and teacher of mine. He will be in Boston on Nov. 9 and I encourage anyone interested to come. It’s a lot cheaper then getting all the way to Ireland and it will be a wonderful day!
I have had many teachers in my life. My first and perhaps most deeply felt one was my mom. For many of us, this is true. Wether we feel our relationship with her was wonderful, horrible or somewhere in between, this initial relationship is one of our greatest teachers.
Next comes Dad. I have been reflecting recently on some of my favorite (and humorous) things I have learned from my Dad. Here are the top 10 (according to me)
Me & Dad & Dennis (my big bro)
10. Ritz crackers and cheese can be a meal
9. Really, it’s not that windy, we can make it to the next port
8. Fixing stuff, no matter how broken, is much preferred to buying something new
7. Kids are far more resilient than adults think
6. Laughing at yourself, life, and everything else is a really good idea
5. Music is awesome and you should play it loudly in your house all the time and go see it live
4. Movies are also amazing and you should seek out independent and interesting films. They feed you.
3. Even when you feel you are at your worst, you are still probably better than most
2. 95% of life is showing up
1. Keep one hand for yourself and one hand for the boat
Thank you to all my teachers, especially my Dad. You can learn more about him at HIS BLOG
Black Friday. Small Business Saturday. Cyber Monday.
How about BE HUMAN everyday? Or BE KIND anyway? Or SING SING away the day.
Or my favorite….NEW MOON MONDAY (It is in fact a new moon today) – Let’s plant seeds of happy happy!
I must admit the whole shopping focus over this transition from thanksgiving to Christmas can get a little old and yet here I am another small business owner and independent musician who has services and music to offer. So, a hope you will receive this post in love, as I let you know that you can buy my CD’s right now at a discounted holiday price. Thank you for your support.
And on this new moon – a wonderful and powerful time for your own intentions – I wish you ease, grave, passion, motivation, spontaneous joy, giggles, rest, more passion, and anything else you can dream! And join me on Saturday Dec. 21 for my annual Solstice concert and love fest.
Come chant to the full moon. Chant to your heart. Chant to each other. What a wonderful way to kick-off summer! If you are feeling crazy, come chant. If you are feeling fabulous, come chant. Chant and be free! JAYJAGATAMABE JAI JAI MA!
As some of you may know Jayajagatambe is a big hit with children. I am not sure what it is, but all the kids love this track. And I don’t know about you, but I trust kids. you can’t fake it with kids. If they are not feeling the music, that’s usually a sign the music doesn’t have it. You can LISTEN to Jayajagatambe anytime you want on Reverbnation and why not become a fan? Come to the Chat House on Saturday night and hear one of my guitar students help me play JAYJAGATAMBE. I am super excited for him and super excited for me. I will also be playing lots of good tunes to kick off ths summer right for all of Cape Cod! May we all be peaceful, happy, and prosperous!
